DC Holiday Things to Do – National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

Watch in wonder as a massive holiday tree is lit with thousands of sparkling lights on the lawn of the White House. The National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is a beloved annual tradition that has united the country for decades. Every year, the 40-foot Colorado blue spruce tree on the Ellipse (that’s the grassy area just south of the White House) is lit with much pomp, circumstance and celebration. This year, the ceremony takes place on Thursday, December 4 at 5PM, rain or shine. The festivities also include performances by nationally known entertainers, as well as a military band. The night caps off with a personal message from the President of the United States about global peace and harmony.

Wondering how to get tickets to the National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony? Free tickets are distributed each winter through an online lottery, which you must apply for between 10AM on Friday, October 17 and 10AM on Monday, October 20. To enter your name in the lottery, please call 1 (877) 444-6777 or visit www.recreation.gov. You can enter to wine seated tickets or standing room only tickets. Winners will be notified via email after November 3.
